Important factors in dangerous goods air cargo

When transporting dangerous or otherwise special goods by air, you must consider several factors:

  • Strict regulations: because of the danger to human health and the environment, there are strict national and international regulations governing the transportation of dangerous goods by air. It takes a lot of expertise and valuable time to meet all the requirements for packaging, labeling, documentation and handling.
  • Packaging and labeling: dangerous goods must be properly packed and labeled to ensure safety during transport. Because of the wide variety of dangerous goods, each with their own requirements and hazard labels, this can be particularly challenging.
  • Required personnel training: all workers involved in transportation must be trained to handle materials safely.
  • Safety measures: to minimize the risk of incidents in the transportation of dangerous goods, additional safety measures are needed. This includes requiring special equipment and vehicles, as well as proper precautions when loading and unloading cargo.

Our services in air cargo transportation

Shipping preparation

Preparing dangerous goods for shipment is no easy task, but our specialists don’t turn their hand to it. Every day they pack, label and document multiple hazardous air cargoes for transport. It does not matter whether the cargo weighs only a few pounds or several hundred pounds.

E-recognition

To transport dangerous goods by air, you as a freight forwarder must have the proper accreditation. If you don’t have one, Special Cargo can take over full legal liability through our E-recognition, issued by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.

Custom packaging and encasing of special goods

Cargoes that are too large, fragile or expensive for regular packaging, or require alternative packaging for other reasons, we can custom pack for air transport. We think along with your wishes and take into account the specifics of the cargo. In our workshop, we then make custom wooden formwork.

Competency-based Training & Assessment from IATA.

Competency-based Training & Assessment (CBTA) is a new methodology for training and assessment in the transportation of dangerous goods by air. CBTA is regulated by the international aviation organizations ICAO and IATA.
Basically, CBTA training focuses on competencies associated with specific jobs. That means employees are trained for their duties and responsibilities, and less on topics they will never use in practice. CBTA went into effect worldwide on January 1, 2023, in the Netherlands from July 1, 2023.
Last year, IATA recognized Special Cargo College as the first CBTA-accredited training organization in the Netherlands. We are now working hard to integrate this new training method into our available courses. In the course offerings, these are identified by the codings 7.1 through 7.10 – which stand for the functions they belong to.
