Last week, the Labor Inspectorate (Arbeidsinspectie) warned about the unsafe working conditions of grocery delivery drivers. Among others, coming into contact with the refrigerant dry ice has risks such as freezing and suffocation. Special Cargo recognizes these dangers: working with dry ice requires proper knowledge and measures. We developed the e-learning “Working safely with dry ice” especially for that purpose. It is now also available in English.

Unsafe

The Labor Inspectorate recently conducted an inspection of five major supermarket delivery companies. One of the findings was that working with dry ice can be unsafe. That’s right, if the employee does not have the proper knowledge and does not take appropriate precautions. If it does, dry ice is an easy and effective refrigerant for transportation and storage of medicines and perishable (food) goods.

Risks

Improper use of dry ice indeed has great risks. For example, when touched, the skin can freeze. And in non-ventilated areas, dry ice can lead to suffocation. So you have to know how to deal with this. You’ll learn that with the e-learning “Working safely with dry ice. For example, did you know that you should always wear thermal gloves and eye protection when you may come in contact with dry ice?

Being a good employer

Article 5 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act states that activities that may pose a risk to employees must be included in the Risk Inventory and Evaluation (Risico-Inventarisatie en -Evaluatie, RI&E). And that the employer should take steps to minimize existing risks. All these things you will learn in the e-learning. This is how you as an employer give substance to being a good employer.

Register immediately!

Should everyone then go through complicated training? Definitely not! This online training will teach you everything you need to know to work safely with dry ice in practice in 1-2 hours. At the end of the e-learning, you will be given a series of questions to check that you are sufficiently familiar with the risks of dry ice.
