The draft version PGS 37-2 Storage of Lithium Energy Carriers has the necessary impact on organizations dealing with storage of lithium batteries and or accumulators. With the upcoming legislation, the rules regarding storage are becoming stricter and preparation is necessary.

Applicable to whom?

The upcoming new legislation applies to any location where energy carriers are stored. Depending on the type of energy carriers, the area of the fire compartment and the public accessibility of the storage facilities, different regulations will apply to storage.

What does the new regulation say?

The regulations assume that storage facilities and showrooms for energy carriers are designed as fire compartments. A fire compartment is an area that has a Resistance to Fire Breakthrough and Fire Overflow of at least 60 minutes.

In practice, the above regulations mean that almost every company that has energy carriers on hand will have to have multiple fire compartments. If other dangerous goods (e.g., aerosols, flammable liquids, etc.) are stored, additional fire compartments are required. In practice, this means that almost every company that has energy carriers on hand will need to have multiple fire compartments.

Training

Companies covered by the PGS37-2 legislation also face new training requirements. For example, it states that a skilled trained expert must be appointed within the organization. This expert will need to be present within the company during operations at the storage facility.
