Storage of lithium-ion batteries restricted: ‘It’s almost overregulated now’

The rules for storing devices with lithium-ion batteries are becoming much stricter. A warehouse with electric bicycles, cell phones or other devices with batteries, for example, must invest heavily in fire protection in the coming year because of the new directive PGS 37-2. ‘From a situation without too many regulations, we are now going to the point where it is almost over-regulated,’ lecturer Teun Graven told Nieuwsblad Transport.

In recent years there have been several incidents of fires in sheds caused by batteries in electric bicycles or vehicles. Consider the fire in Maastricht at a courier, fires at bike stores, the fires at Picnic and the one at the Stella store in Nunspeet. The problem is that this is often a rapidly spreading fire that releases toxic materials.

“That’s why the need arose in both government and industry to make ground rules,” says Teun Graven, Hazardous Materials Safety Advisor and instructor at Special Cargo College. “From a situation without too many regulations, we are now going to the point where it is almost over-regulated.
